All about AMD PowerPlay Technology
AMD PowerPlay technology is a power management technology that delivers high performance features when needed and conserves power when the demand on the graphics processor is low. Use the PowerPlay page to manage the power efficiency of your graphics processors for higher performance, longer battery life, or balance of the two.
For certain systems, you can also use the page to enable and configure Vari-Bright™ technology, which optimizes notebook display brightness for lower power consumption as well as other settings that can help improve battery life.
The PowerPlay page can be found under the Power group in Standard View and Advanced View.
Configuring AMD PowerPlay Technology
Using AMD PowerPlay technology, you can control how your notebook balances graphics processor performance with battery life. You can choose to optimize your notebook for better graphics performance, longer battery life, or a balance of the two.
- In either Standard View or Advanced View, navigate to the page.
- Select the desired setting for the following power sources:
- Plugged In—Specifies the setting you want to use when your notebook is plugged in (AC power).
- Battery—Specifies the setting that you want to use when your notebook is running on battery (DC power).
- Click Apply.
Enabling and Configuring Vari-Bright Technology
Use Vari-Bright technology to automatically optimize the brightness of your notebook display to lower power consumption. When Vari-Bright technology is enabled, the images on your display are constantly tracked. When possible, the brightness for your display is decreased and compensated by increased gamma levels. This reduces system power requirements while ensuring your display remains sufficiently lit at all times.
For most AMD graphics cards, automatic brightness adjustments made through Vari-Bright technology are gradual. When your display is predominately white (for example, when using Notepad or Microsoft® Word), its original brightness is also restored to prevent it from appearing too dim.
Enabling Refresh Rate Reduction
Use AMD PowerPlay™ technology to automatically reduce the refresh rate for your LCD display to lower power consumption for your notebook. This feature should not impact visual quality and is available only for displays supporting multiple refresh rates.
- In either Standard View or Advanced View, navigate to the page.
- If available, select Allow refresh rate reduction.
- Click Apply.
