Can’t access router settings page: why and how to fix it

A Wi-Fi router is an incredibly useful device for creating a wireless network distribution on a specific residential area. And it’s so simple: to buy a router, connect it to the cable provider, dig a little in the settings – and ready. It’s harder to put it. However, let’s turn our attention to a problem that may arise during an attempt to enter the router’s settings. As we all know, to enter the user interface of the device (or the control panel), you need to connect the router to the PC via a network cable (or use a Wi-Fi adapter to connect to the network), and then enter the desired address in the browser.

Usually, you can enter the interface of the router using the address 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. However, many users claim that they encounter an error during the transition to these addresses, or at the address specified by the device manufacturer. The error can be different – it all depends on the browser you choose. For example, a page is not found, not available, etc. etc. Nevertheless, we do not care about the mistake, and it is not so important.

The important thing is that, for some reason, you can not open the settings of your router. Why is this happening? In fact, this problem is extremely multifaceted: there can be an incredible number of reasons for not having access to the settings of a Wi-Fi router. Anyway, we will try to specify many of them, and also tell you how to return access to the settings of the router.

How to fix a problem when can’t access router settings page in a browser

First of all, we recommend that you make sure that you actually enter the address that the device manufacturer notified you about. This address you can easily find on the package of the router, on the side or back, usually in some easily readable font or on a noticeable background. Perhaps you are trying to enter the address 192.168.0.1 into the address bar of the browser. instead of the required 192.168.1.1., or something like that. This happens quite often among users, so you should make sure that you enter everything correctly.

If you are sure that the address is exactly what you need, then make sure that the router is connected to the power. Perhaps you hit the power connector or disconnected the router from the network for a restart, and then forgot to connect it back. In any case, make sure that the device works, even if only by the indicators that are located on the body. Of course, this is a pretty trivial advice, but, at times, it is still worth checking out all possible options. Also it’s worth noting that if the router does not really work and does not continue to work, then you may have problems with the device or with the power supply.

Ok, the router is connected to the power supply, and all the lights are on. What else could be wrong? In fact, a lot more than that. Let’s now verify that you have correctly connected the router to the cable of your ISP. The cable provided by the provider must be connected to the WAN port – and no other! A network cable between the PC and the router (if there is a need) must be connected to one of the LAN ports. Check that you have everything just as well. If you confuse the ports, then the connection will not work!

Checked, reconnected, but nothing ever works? Well, let’s now turn our attention to your computer or device, through which you connect to a Wi-Fi router network. What do you see in the status of connecting to the network? To understand if the device is connected to the router is quite simple: in the status you will see either a clean icon or an exclamation mark (lack of access to the Internet). However, if you see a red cross in network status, that’s the answer. Again, check to see if you’ve connected everything correctly. We also recommend that you try another network cable if you are connecting to a computer, as it could be damaged.

The router is turned on, properly connected to the provider and the computer, the network cable is also OK, but you still can not access the device’s control panel. Perhaps the problem is not with the router and its connection, but with the settings of the PC from which you are trying to log in to the correct address. First of all, you need to check the settings for obtaining an IP address. Perhaps you have a static IP address on the computer. If this is the case, then you need to set the automatic retrieval of the IP address. To do this, you need to do the following:

  • click on the PCM icon to connect to the network and select “Open Network and Internet Options”;
  • click on “Configuring adapter settings”;
  • double click on the LMC on the network connection;
  • click the “Properties” button;
  • double click LMB on “IP version 4 (TCP / IP)”;
  • check the box next to the options “Obtain an IP address automatically” and “Obtain the DNS server address automatically”;
  • save the changes.

Try now to re-enter the control panel of your router. Typically, if a static IP address was previously set, the problem with the input should be resolved. However, if you did not manage to enter the router settings, then the case may be quite bad. For example, your device could be out of order. This often happens after not the most successful firmware of the router. Also, you should not exclude the failure of the network adapter installed in your device.
