About the ‘dwm.exe’ Process in Full Detail
Some users, while browsing Task Manager once again, may come across the process dwm.exe. Today we will tell you in detail what this process is, what functions it performs in a Windows system and whether you should worry about it.
What is dwm.exe?
It is worth noting right away that dwm.exe is a system process, so you do not have to worry about it! The functions of this process include working with various effects for windows in the system.
Shadows, animations, transparency, previews of open folders and programs in the taskbar, and many other things related to the graphical interface of Windows – dwm file is responsible for all this.
But how exactly does dwm.exe work? Without going into technical details, when you open, for example, a program, its window data are first sent to the computer memory, and then Windows, with the help of dwm.exe, finds this data, processes it, and only then displays the program window on the user desktop, and not just anyhow, but with general settings (effects, window size, etc.).
Resources Consumed, Size and Location of dwm.exe
dwm usually consumes minimal system resources for its operation – it is located in C:\Windows\System32. The file itself is about 50 Kb.
It is worth noting that some users may be affected by the high CPU and RAM load from the dwm.exe process. If you encounter a similar situation, we recommend you to do the following:
- update your graphics driver;
- uninstall all programs, which may modify Windows graphical interface;
- scan your system for viruses and get rid of any found malware.
Usually, after a video card driver update, everything goes back to normal and dwm.exe stops overloading the system.
How Do I Disable dwm.exe?
Actually you can’t. Like, there is no way to do this at all. While you could disable it in XP and older versions of Windows, you will not be able to do so in modern Windows. The reason is that dwm.exe is required for the graphical interface of Windows 7, 8, and 10, and without it the operating system will not work properly.
