Update KB5022303 Fails to Install on Windows 11 – How to Fix

I tried to install the update KB5022303 on my Windows 11, but… The installation got frozen. Whether it downloaded or not – I don’t know, I don’t get it. Is there any way to fix this? I don’t want this update hanging in the Windows Update all the time.

Solution

KB5022303 is a new cumulative update for Windows 11 which aims to improve its performance. Among other things, it contains fixes for some system bugs. Unfortunately, you can already find complaints on the web about problems with the installation of this update, including you, of course.

As a rule, such errors are solved in the following ways:

  • run a troubleshooter;
  • reset the Windows Update components;
  • manually download the update.

To run the troubleshooter, you need to go to Settings→System→Troubleshooting→Other Troubleshooters and select Windows Update. Follow the instructions from the tool, then restart your PC and try installing KB5022303 again.

If the tool didn’t work, you can try resetting the Windows Update components, as they are probably not working properly. Open system Notepad and paste the following script into it:

SC config trustedinstaller start=auto

net stop bits

net stop wuauserv

net stop msiserver

net stop cryptsvc

net stop appidsvc

Ren %Systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

Ren %Systemroot%\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

regsvr32.exe /s atl.dll

regsvr32.exe /s urlmon.dl

regsvr32.exe /s mshtml.dll

netsh winsock reset

netsh winsock reset proxy

rundll32.exe pnpclean.dll,RunDLL_PnpClean /DRIVERS /MAXCLEAN

dism /Online /Cleanup-image /ScanHealth

dism /Online /Cleanup-image /CheckHealth

dism /Online /Cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

dism /Online /Cleanup-image /StartComponentCleanup

Sfc /ScanNow

net start bits

net start wuauserv

net start msiserver

net start cryptsvc

net start appidsvc

Now click on “File”→”Save As…”. Choose a place of your choice, e.g. the Desktop, name the file whatever you want and change the file extension to BAT. For example, make it WinRESET.bat. Click RMB on the file and select “Run as administrator”. Click “Yes” in the UAC dialog box and wait for the Windows Update components to reset.

If you can’t properly install KB5022303 even after resetting the Windows Update, go to the update page in the Microsoft Update Catalog and download it manually.
